Protest against revised river setback rules

A protest rally was organised against the Supreme Court’s decision to increase the setback standard along the Bagmati River and its tributaries by 20 meters.

SC ordered the relocation of residents living along the Bagmati River and other rivers stating that the existing 20-meter setback standard for riverbanks was deemed inadequate and, hence, the court ordered an additional 20-meter increase on December 18.

The protest began under the Bagmati bridge in Kupondole and proceeded through Thapathali, Tripureshwar, and the newly constructed Kupondole bridge, before circling back to its starting point. Demonstrators voiced their concerns over the revised standards, which they claim infringe on their homes and livelihoods along the riverbanks.
