The Tharu community is celebrating Maghi as the commencement of a new year within their community.

After the government decided on July 18, 2015, to abolish the Kamaiya custom and implemented it from the 1st of Magh of the same year, this festival is also celebrated as Independence Day among the Tharu community.

The occasion is marked by the observance of rituals such as taking holy dips in rivers and ponds, worshiping at various temples, and partaking in culinary delights.

Traditional dishes like ghee, yam, and khichadi hold a special place in the festive feasts, accompanied by the indulgence in sweets like Chaku and those crafted from sesame and molasses.
