Nepal joined the global community today in observing the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a series of programs aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of curbing illicit trafficking. Highlighting the day’s events was a “Prabhatferi Rally”, a dawn procession, which saw participation from various local organizations and government officials.

The procession commenced from the main gate of Bhrikutimandap early this morning. It followed a route through Ratnapark before culminating at the Nepali army base. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Ravi Lamichhane served as the chief guest.

Participants in the Rally included representatives from Nepal Scout, the Parents’ Association, the Pharmaceutical Professionals’ Association, and the Federation of Nepalese Journalists, among others. They carried banners designed to increase public awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the necessity of combating illicit drug trade.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, celebrated annually on June 26, is rooted in the 42nd section of the 1987 Declaration of the United Nations. Section 112 of the declaration calls for worldwide observance of this day, with the primary aim of freeing global communities from the detrimental impacts of drug use and trade.
