A lake outburst in Solukhumbu district triggered massive flooding and landslide on Friday, causing widespread destruction in the area. Images of the flood show parts of Thame, a settlement in the Everest Region completely submerged. One person is reported missing, and the disaster swept twelve houses and a school building.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dwarika Prasad Ghimire of the District Police Office in Solukhumbu, the destruction was extensive. “One person has been reported missing. The flood and landslide swept twelve houses, a clinic, and a basic school, while seven additional houses remain at serious risk due to the ongoing erosion of the riverbank,” DSP Ghimire reported.

The avalanche struck around 1:45 PM on Friday, triggering the disaster that buried an estimated 15 to 20 houses. A rescue team from the Nepalese Army was swiftly deployed to the scene, successfully rescuing six individuals from the rubble.

Following the Thame flood, the police, administration, and local authorities in Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, and Khotang have urged people living near the Dudhkoshi River to remain vigilant.

Residents are advised to stay safe as there is an increased risk of further damage due to potential floods. The Department of Water and Meteorology has also asked residents to take precautions until further notice.
