A march was held from Maitighar Mandala to Baluwatar by various citizen groups, demanding justice for Nirmala Kurmi, a woman who disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 2075 BS. Despite government assurances to move Kurmi’s case to court, protesters claim that the ruling party is protecting the main accused, who has recently been appointed as a provincial minister.
The protest, organized by nine civic groups including Youth Advocacy Nepal, Women’s Rights Forum, and Women’s Security Pressure Group, among others, highlighted concerns over the lack of action in Kurmi’s case. During the march, tensions rose as protesters attempted to enter a restricted area near the Prime Minister’s residence, leading to a brief scuffle with the police.
Nirmala Kurmi’s case dates back to 2062 BS when her husband passed away in Nepalgunj-17, Banke. Four years later, in 2066 BS, her two sons died mysteriously within ten days of each other. Following these events, Badshah Kurmi, a Nepali Congress leader, allegedly transferred Nirmala’s property to his name, promising to safeguard it. Nirmala went missing in 2075 BS, and it is suspected that she was killed after being kidnapped.
