Victims, rights groups draw attention to shortcomings in Transitional Justice Amendment Bill

Conflict-affected communities staged a peaceful demonstration and sit-in Baneshwor, Kathmandu on Thursday morning. The protesters called for amendments to the Transitional Justice Amendment Bill, which they argue is flawed and fails to adequately address the rights of victims.

The bill, which has already been approved by the House of Representatives, has come under criticism for containing provisions that grant immunity to perpetrators, thereby denying victims their rights to truth, justice, and compensation. The Nepal Maoist Victims Association also participated in the sit-in yesterday, highlighting their concerns about the bill’s shortcomings.

International organizations have echoed these concerns. Human Rights Watch, the International Commission of Jurists, and Amnesty International released a joint statement on Tuesday, underscoring the bill’s deficiencies and urging for necessary reforms. The amendment bill is currently awaiting review in the National Assembly.
