Nepal Police arrested a sociology professor at the Tribhuvan University (TU) Prem Chalaune after he reached the Kathmandu District Court to protest against the government’s decision of withdrawing a case against student leaders of the Nepal Students Union (NSU) accused of attacking him.

Chalaune was brutally attacked by a group of students associated with NSU, the student wing of the Nepali Congress, at the TU premises in October 2020.

Police had lodged a case against NSU leaders including Hari Acharya and Yogendra Rawal, however, the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday decided to withdraw the case.

Chalaune had reached the court to stage a fast-unto-death strike against the Cabinet decision before he and a few others accompanying him were taken under control by police.
