Nepal celebrates Krishna Janmashtami

Nepal celebrated Krishna Janmashtami today, the annual festival of Hindus to mark the birth of Lord Krishna. It is celebrated on the eighth day of the dark half of the Month Bhadra.

On this day, devotees gather at the Krishna Mandir of Patan, Lalitpur to worship Lord Krishna. Every year thousands of devotees visit here to celebrate.

Established by Siddhi Narsingh Malla during the 17th century, the Krishna Mandir holds a special place in Nepalese or Newa Community as it is believed that Lord Krishna along with the Gopalas came to Nepal/Kathmandu. The Gopala people are also considered as the first rulers of Nepal.
