Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha has stated that prisons should be converted into correctional centers. DPM Shrestha made this statement during the inauguration of a newly constructed prison building.

DPM Shrestha stated, “Irrespective of past activities, inmates should not be suppressed and should be given an atmosphere to live a humane life.” He proposed the implementation of meditation programs for the incarcerated.

Some prisons in Nepal have libraries and most provide income-generating life skills.

Research shows that libraries in prisons help create a better environment inside the prison, and also libraries along with newspapers help prisoners better connect and accommodate to the outside world and may help prevent them from relapsing into crime. Drugs and limited space, however, are still big problems in Nepalese prisons.
