Continuous rainfall over the past few days has led to rising water levels in several major rivers, prompting warnings across multiple districts. Authorities have urged heightened vigilance along the coasts of the Koshi, Narayani, Karnali, Kankai, and Kamala rivers, where water levels are expected to hover near the alert level over the next three days.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology reports a surge in river flow nationwide today and tomorrow, with critical warnings issued for rivers such as Narayani, Bagmati, Tinau, East Rapti, West Rapti, Babai, and their tributaries. These rivers are expected to reach dangerous levels, increasing the risk of flooding in nearby areas. Residents along riverbanks are urged to remain extremely cautious, especially in low-lying regions.
The situation is particularly concerning in the districts of Madhesh Province, as well as Udaypur, Sindhuli, Makwanpur, Chitwan, Nawalparasi (east and west of Bardaghat-Susta), Palpa, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, Tanahun, Syangja, Parbat, and surrounding areas. Smaller rivers in these districts are predicted to experience a significant rise in water levels, with authorities warning of a high risk of flash floods in some areas. Local residents and travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution.
Similarly, flash flood risks have also been raised for Panchthar, Dhankuta, Bhojpur, Khotang, Okhaldhunga, Ilam, Jhapa, and several other districts, including those in the Kathmandu Valley and the Midwestern region. These areas are expected to experience a moderate risk of flash flooding, particularly in rivers running through Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhupalchowk, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Surkhet, Dailekh, and Achham.
Meanwhile, persistent rainfall has caused severe disruptions to transportation and infrastructure over the country. A landslide triggered by the downpour has obstructed the road connecting Kathmandu to Bhimphedi via Kulekhani and Phakhel, at Kaura in Indrasarobar Rural Municipality-2, Makawanpur district.
Air travel has also been impacted, with numerous flights delayed or canceled due to the adverse weather conditions that have persisted since Wednesday night.
Authorities have urged residents to stay informed of weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
