The Supreme Court today issued an interim stay order against implementation of the government’s notice to pay taxes.

A joint bench of advocates Anil Kumar Sinha and Dr Manoj Sharma issued the order which says that taxes can be paid within 30 days of lifting the ongoing lockdown.

The Inland Revenue Department on June 2 had issued a notice asking people to clear their taxes but the deadline was later extended to June 19 following widespread protest from the public.

Advocates including, Srijana Adhikari, had filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court saying that the government’s directive to clear taxes had hit businesses.

The Court’s order dictates that the opening date of the lockdown should be considered as the start of the 30-days period.

A public decision issued by the Court before this had defined the first day of resumption of public vehicles as the first day of lifting lockdown.
