A recent report by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has revealed that over the span of a year, from April 14, 2023, to April 3, 2024, more than 3,795 fire incidents occurred across the country.
These incidents claimed the lives of over 100 individuals and affected 4,725 families. The economic losses were significant, with properties valued at over Rs 2.33 billion destroyed by the flames.
Despite a temporary decrease in fire incidents due to rainfall, the resurgence of fires has renewed concerns, prompting calls for increased vigilance and precautionary measures. Fire-related casualties surpassed those of other natural disasters, excluding fatalities from the Jajarkot earthquake.
Further analysis of NDRRMA data reveals fatalities during the same period. Lightning strikes accounted for 43 deaths, while snake bites claimed the lives of 20 individuals. Avalanches, wildlife attacks, and wildfires collectively resulted in 12, 43, and 5 deaths, respectively.
A total of 477 lives were lost in various disaster incidents since April 14 of the preceding year.
