India’s Central Electricity Authority has approved the import of 22 MW (megawatt) of electricity from Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). NEA will be exporting excess electricity produced by Chilime Hydropower Company.

The approval was obtained on October 31 to export electricity to India, confirmed Suresh Bahadur Bhattarai, spokesperson for NEA.

With this, Nepal will now export a total of 386 MW of electricity to India. Nepal has exported more than a billion units of surplus power to India in the past five months from which Nepal has earned nearly NRs. 8.5 billion.

Along with neighbour country India, Nepal is also planning to export electricity to Bangladesh. Therefore, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has intended to expand and strengthen the transmission and distribution system across the country.
