Government unveils Common Minimum Programme, repeats past promises

The 10-party ruling alliance unveiled its Common Minimum Programme (CMP) on Thursday.

The ruling alliance, in the CMP, pledged to end all kinds of discrimination and to build a society on the basis of equity, liberty and justice.

However, most points in the CMP are similar to the earlier promises and seem like a populist strategy.

The government has promised to amend the Citizenship Act within six months Citizenship bill to end gender discrimination in citizenship issues. Nevertheless, the same promise was made by Prime Minister Dahal three months ago.

Meanwhile, the government has also announced to create policy, structural and operational reforms to transform and strengthen the country’s economy – a promise repeated for a long time now with no proper execution.

Another point of the CMP states the government, under peace accord, will review the cases filed against those involved in various movements held in different parts of the country which will pave the way to release prisoners of political nature.

Other points include seeking resolution of border issues, including Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani through diplomatic means, foreign labour permit distribution from local government and completing work of comprehensive peace accords.
