Ruling coalition unable to arrive upon an agreement on Nepal’s next Prime Minister

The five-party coalition, which has been able to claim a majority in the House of Representatives (HoR), is unable to arrive upon an agreement on who will be Nepal’s next Prime Minister.

Nepali Congress believes its leader should lead Nepal as they have the highest number of elected members in the HoR, and that choosing a Prime Minister from any other party would be going against the people’s wishes.

Meanwhile, CPN-MC has demanded that their party Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal be allowed to lead the first half of the five-year governance term period.

On Sunday, 18th Dec, 2022, President Bhandari called on the country’s political parties to form a new government within a week – of which the deadline ends today at 5 PM. The alliance is scheduled to hold a meeting today to discuss the way forward, and to possibly decide upon Nepal’s next Prime Minister.
