President rejects signing of Citizenship Bill again; Petition filed to suspend bill

A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court demanding the suspension of the Citizenship Bill.

Senior Advocate Dr. Surendra Bhandari filed the petition at the Supreme Court against the President’s Office, Shital Niwas, and other opposition parties on Thursday.

Dr. Surendra filed the petition asking not to pass the Citizenship Bill as it was not relevant for the country in the current context. The hearing for the petition which was adjourned by the court on Tuesday has been rescheduled for Wednesday.

Meanwhile, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, who had time till Tuesday midnight to sign the Citizenship bill, refused to sign the bill passed by the House of Representatives (HoR) for the second time.

The Constitution of Nepal does not equip the President with freedom to send back the bill passed by the HoR for a second time.
