Bangladesh seeking to buy electricity from Nepal; asks India for passage

India, September 9

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has sought power transmission corridor via India to import electricity generated in Nepal into Bangladesh.

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who completed her four-day official visit to India on Thursday, requested her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, to allow permission to use the Indian territory for power transmission. The joint statement of Bangladesh-India reads, “It is agreed to strengthen sub-regional cooperation in the power sector. The Bangladesh side requested for import of power from Nepal and Bhutan through India.”

The government of India has agreed to the terms affirming that the guidelines are already in place.

Indian counterpart has assured to ease process for the trade of power between Nepal and Bangladesh using guidelines for Import/Export (Cross Border) of Electricity-2018 prepared by the Energy Ministry of India.
