Scrap traders working in Kathmandu led a demonstration on Sunday protesting against discriminatory practices by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). The rally, which began at Maitighar Mandala and proceeded to Baneshwor, saw a large turnout of scrap traders demanding safety, prosperity, and dignity for scrap yard dealers. They also carried pamphlets like, “Respect the decision of Supreme Court”, “Stop dozer terror” etc.

The protest was sparked by recent actions taken by KMC, which included the installation of bulldozers at waste collection centers and a prohibition on waste collection and storage within the metropolitan area. The scrap collectors and traders argue that their livelihoods are being threatened.

This is not the first time the scrap traders have taken to the streets. On March 3, they staged a similar demonstration, marching from the UN Park in Buddhanagar to Ratnapark via Tripureshwar and Sundhara. Protesters voiced their concerns about the KMC’s same measures, particularly condemning the use of bulldozers at scrap collection centers.
