At least five people have died and 27 others sustained injured in a bus accident near Kudu Barah Chowk, Jajarkot on Sunday morning.

Five persons died on the spot when the night bus (Na 6 Kha 2757) heading towards Ridi Bazzar of Jajarkot from Nepalgunj met with an accident at Kudu Baraha Chowk around 2:00 am this morning. The bus had fallen about 150 meters below the road.

The deceased have been identified as Sandhya Malla Shahi, 24, of Rukum West, her four-year-old daughter Divya Shahi, Sher Bahadur Pariyar, 25, of Jajarkot, Anila Nepali, 18, and Gangaram Yadav, 40, of Saptari, as per Jajarkot police.

According to Madhu Kumar Thapa, DSP at Jajarkot District Police Office, there were 32 passengers on the bus. As many as 27 injured were rescued by the police and taken to Jajarkot District Hospital for treatment in police vehicles and other buses.

The condition of three of the injured is critical, police said. DSP Thapa informed that preparation was underway to send the critically injured to Nepalgunj in a helicopter for further treatment.

The cause of the accident has yet to be ascertained, while police have detained the bus driver and investigation into the incident is underway.
