In separate incidents, two women have been killed for dowry in the Sarlahi district of Madhesh Province.

Sarlahi District Police Office Chief SP Naresh Raj Subedi informed that Abdul Shah Phakir Haripur-3, murdered his spouse 23-year-old Ida Khatun accusing her of not meeting his expectation for a dowry.

Phakir was reportedly torturing Khatun mentally, emotionally, and physically for not convincing her parents to ‘gift him’ cash of Rs 100,000.

Khatun went to her parent’s home after an argument and returned to her in-laws after the two families sat for discussions, according to police.

Khatun was first beaten to death and hanged to ‘show’ that she committed suicide. Police have arrested two on the charge of their involvement in the crime.

Meanwhile, the body of 45-year-old Indrakala Devi Shah was seized by police from a cremation pyre over the suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, and have sent the half-burnt body to the Provincial Hospital Sarlahi for a post-mortem examination.

It is said Indrakala’s husband Rajaram Shah used to beat her for not meeting his dowry expectations. In their final argument, Indrakala was severely injured but was not taken to a hospital which caused her death.

Indrakala’s spouse Rajaram is absconding since the day the incident took place.
