Seven people have lost their lives to elephant attacks in Jhapa district this year alone. Meanwhile, an elephant was found dead with both its tusks cut off yesterday. Elephant-human conflicts in Jhapa is a pressing issue with 67 lives lost to elephant attacks since 2068 B.S. and twenty elephants found dead since 2062 B.S.
As a response, the Division Forest Office in Jhapa has been building fences to protect communities. Eight years ago, an electric fence stretching 18 kilometers was built in Bahundangi, Jhapa, costing Rs 12 million.
Meghraj Rai, the head of the Division Forest Office in Jhapa, stated that 35 kilometers of solar fencing was installed in the Jalthal forest area in 2076 BS, with an estimated cost of Rs 56.527 million.
Additionally, in the second phase of the Jalthal forest area, 6.39 kilometers of solar fencing was constructed in Bhadrapur in 2078 BS, costing Rs 10.14 million.
Last year, a 16.98-kilometer solar fence was erected in the Charali-Magurmadi section of Mechinagar Municipality, costing Rs 25.39 million.
Relief amount of Rs 71.97 million has been distributed to the victims since 2068 BS till last year. This year only seven people have died in elephant attacks in Jhapa.
