Surgeon Dr Ramesh Singh Bhandari has called on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli with a proposal to resume liver transplant service, which was halted due to the corona pandemic, and make the cost of liver transplantation affordable.
The government has been providing concessional treatment to kidney and cancer, among eight other diseases. As liver transplantation started only last year in Nepal, there is no concession from the government for its treatment.
Due to the high cost of liver transplants many patients are unable to afford the procedure, leading to premature loss of life.
Dr Singh said that he went to meet Prime Minister Oli with a proposal saying that the lives of many patients could be saved if liver transplantation was made affordable like other diseases.
According to him, PM Oli was also positive on the issue.
“He has said he will do his best to make liver transplantation as accessible and affordable as possible,” said Singh.
