Nepal Police on Sunday intercepted a smuggling racket in Biratnagar and seized intraocular lenses and medicines being smuggled into Nepal from India.

Police have said the smugglers were able to flee after noticing approaching police personnel, however, left the consignment behind.

The consignment included 120 intraocular lenses and medicines valued at NRS 864,000 and NRS 34,800 respectively. Police also seized other items worth NRS 303,420.

Police are suspecting the batch of goods was intended for eye hospitals in Biratnagar who are looking to evade customs on such goods. They have said an investigation is underway.
