A landslide claimed the lives of six people and left four others missing after it buried three houses in Shailung Rural Municipality-3, Doramba, on Saturday night.
The deceased have been identified as Chandika Shrestha(30), her 18-month-old son Aayush, Urmila Pahari(57) Sandeep Pahari(30), Santosh Pahari(11), and Bigyan Pahari (14), according to the District Police Office. The landslide struck at night, catching residents off guard.
Anjana Shrestha(11), was injured in the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment. The vice-chairperson of the rural municipality, Khamala Thapa Magar, confirmed the situation.
Rescue efforts commenced immediately after the incident, with locals, police personnel, and Nepal Army personnel joining forces in a search and rescue operation. Deputy Superintendent of Police Pradeep Kumar Singh of the District Police Office, Ramechhap, reported that the search for the missing individuals is ongoing.
In addition to the loss of lives, the floodwaters washed away a bridge over the Andheri rivulet, which connected wards 2 and 3 of the rural municipality, adding further challenges to the rescue operations.
Local authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant as the monsoon season continues to bring heavy rainfall and the risk of further landslides.
