An estimated hundred Rohingyas protested outside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Kathmandu, on 27th June, in a bid to raise the office’s attention towards their plight. Clashes also ensued during the protests, in which a demonstrator was injured.

Rohingyas have listed an eleven point demand:

  1. Ensure our fundamental rights as granted by the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948).
  2. Ensure 100% support to our children who study in private schools, and ensure their rights as granted by the UNCRC (1989).
  3. Provisions for legal work permits and the freedom to choose professions ourselves in accordance with UN Declaration of Human Rights (1948).
  4. Change discriminatory policies and provisions against us.
  5. Monthly supports for subsistence, until provisions for work permits are made.
  6. Request Nepal government to stop visa penalty against urban refugees, and legal recognition as refugees.
  7. Offer 100% support towards medical needs.
  8. If you cannot ensure our demands, please refer our cases to the UNHCR Headquarters for resettlement like the 113,500 Bhutanese refugees who were settled other third countries.
  9. Allow those willing to return home to do so at the earliest.
  10. Send those who are awaiting Canadian resettlement process at the earliest.
  11. Quick action against the security guards who hit one of our protesters during our peaceful protests.
