Incessant rainfall has flooded several regions in the southern plains of Nepal, especially Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Saptari, Dhanusha, and Rupandehi Districts. Several online and social media accounts showed cities inundated with flood water – triggered by continuous rainfall, but also affected by poor sewerage infrastructure in the affected cities.
For example, a water-logged Janakpurdham has been inundated for two days due to lack of an appropriate outlet system. Similarly, the Tengra River in Itahari, through which much of Itahari’s sewerage lines are connected had swollen due to floodwaters on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, 14 monsoon-related disaster fatalities have been recorded so far, as per the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority (NDRRMA). The fatalities include deaths from flooding and landslides.
Every year, monsoon-related disasters in Nepal affects thousands of lives, and claims several lives. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, between June to October 2021, 673 people lost their lives, 69 people were reported missing and 181 people were injured due to the waterinduced disasters. Similarly, thousands were displaced after floods and landslides claimed their homes, forcing them to move to temporary shelters.
