The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has intensified its action against vehicles owners that violate traffic rules.

Spokesperson at MTPD, SP Jeevan Kumar Shrestha, informed that action was taken against 5,050 rule violators even after they reached home in the first six months of the current fiscal year.

According to Shrestha, the CCTV monitoring was put in place after the tendency to break traffic rules in the absence of a traffic cop increased.

“We are consistently monitoring vehicles in several outposts as well as roads of the Kathmandu Valley through CCTVs. Upon identifying the number plates of rule violators, we call the persons concerned to the office for further action,” Shrestha said.

MTPD has set up a separate CCTV branch to monitor if vehicle owners are obeying traffic rules. Similarly, the MTPD Directorate also monitors CCTV footages and informs traffic cops stationed in the areas concerned if they find any rule violators.

Traffic police personnel record the rule violators’ vehicle numbers and seek their detailed information from the Department of Transport Management. Depending on the details obtained, MTPD then calls the rule violators on their phones and instructs them to visit the head office for further action.

The receipt of the fine is sent to the rule violators’ homes if they fail to visit MTPD after the call. If nothing works, the vehicle concerned is taken under control.

MTPD is currently monitoring vehicles through as many as 1,684 CCTVs installed in various parts of the Valley. The fine criteria for rule violators are clearly mentioned in the MTPD’s website.
