The government has instructed Nepal Police to prevent suspended Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher JB Rana from entering the Supreme Court.

CJ Cholendra was suspended after 98 lawmakers filed an impeachment motion against him, alleging judicial deviation, misconduct and corruption. He will not be able to perform his duties until the impeachment proceedings are finalized.

Nevertheless, former CJ Cholendra was trying to return to the Supreme Court on Sunday as the tenure of the House of Representatives ended without deciding the fate of the impeachment motion and his misconduct.

An Impeachment Recommendation Committee (IRC) was formed by the House of Representatives to probe into the matter. The IRC had concluded that there is ample ground to impeach CJ Cholendra but he remained defiant during the full course of interrogation.

After he sent a message on Saturday night to the SC administration that he will resume his office from Sunday, security personnel were deployed to prevent him from entering the Supreme Court.

Arguing that the suspension on CJ Cholendra has not been lifted, lawyers from the Nepal Bar and the Supreme Court have gathered in the Supreme Court on Sunday to stop him.

Similarly, strict security has been implemented outside CJ Cholendra’s house as well after which officials from National Human Rights Commission visited his house to check on him.
