Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has been ousted from his position following a failed vote of confidence in the House of Representatives. The vote, held after the UML party withdrew its support, resulted in a resounding rejection of the Prime Minister’s leadership.

According to Article 100 (2) of the Constitution, Dahal requested a vote of confidence, but the outcome was against his favour. Out of the 258 MPs present in the 275-member House of Representatives, only 63 votes were cast in favor of Prachanda, while 194 were against him, with one abstention. A majority of 138 votes is required to retain the position.

Prachanda, who assumed office on December 25, 2022. initially had strong support. In his first vote of confidence on January 10, he received an 268 votes in favor, with only 2 against. Subsequent votes of confidence saw him securing 172 votes on March 20, 2023, 157 votes on March 13, 2024 , and 157 votes on May 20.

However, the political landscape changed as both the Congress and UML parties agreed to form a new government, leaving Prachanda in the minority. The smaller parties, along with Prachanda’s own party, RSP and the Unified Samajwadi Party were insufficient to provide the necessary support to maintain his leadership.
