National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the political parties to include human rights issues in the manifestos that the parties are preparing for the upcoming House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly elections.

The spokesperson for the NHRC, Dr Tikaram Pokharel, has said that the political parties play an important role to protect human rights and that the parties accord high priority to human rights issues as per Nepal’s commitment to various international conventions.

“The political party that is elected as government through election has the main responsibility to protect the democratic system, freedom and human rights,” reads the press release of NHRC on Wednesday.

“NHRC makes a special request to all political parties to prioritize the issues of human rights in their election manifestos in accordance with Nepal’s Constitution, NHRC recommendations and Nepal’s international commitments while respecting, protecting and promoting human rights,” read the statement.

The NHRC informed that they have observed the manifestos prepared by the political parties and appreciate that the political parties had mentioned the issues of human rights in their election manifestos in the past while asking them to include human rights issues in their manifestos this time as well.
