Election Commission (EC) has urged the political parties and candidates to submit the details of expenditures made for the online advertisement in social networking sites for the upcoming National Representative and Provincial Assembly elections.

The EC’s appeal has come as social networking sites are filled with polls-related advertisements after the completion of the candidacy nomination of the candidates for upcoming election which is set to be held on November 20.

Issuing a statement on Monday, EC’s Spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel said that continued monitoring and evaluation of the online advertisement is ongoing by forming a mechanism in the EC’s Secretariat and offices of the EC.

“As per the ‘Policy on Use of Social Sites on Election Management’ issued by the commission, in every process and phase of election, the use of social media should be appropriate for which monitoring and evaluation is being made,”

“The commission has also made a limit of expenditure for election promotion campaign and the candidates are bound to provide the election expenditure, including the advertisement made through social media,” reads the statement.
