Newly appointed Prime Minister of Nepal, Sher Bahadur Deuba has gained the vote of confidence, which took place in the House of Representatives (HoR) on Sunday.

Deuba had proposed the Federal Parliament Secretariat to take a vote of confidence in the first meeting of the reinstated HoR on Sunday.

In the turn of events, Deuba had decided to undergo the floor test at a time when disagreement within the opposition CPN-UML is at its peak and the two factions within the Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal is changing stances every other day.

The provision in the Constitution of Nepal states that a Prime Minister appointed in accordance with Article 76 (5) must undergo a floor test in the parliament within a period of 30 days.

Deuba needed to secure majority of votes in a bid to continue his tenure in correspondence to the tenure of the current House of Representatives at the end of which the general elections would be held following the normal course.

The government would have turned into a caretaker one, the HoR would be dissolved once again and announce fresh snap polls, if Deuba hadn’t gained the vote of confidence.

In the HoR polls on Sunday, 165 votes were cast in favor of Deuba while 83 votes were cast against him.

Among the 249 lawmakers present during the voting, one stayed neutral.

The Nepali Congress, along with 22 lawmakers from the CPN-Maoist, Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal, CPN-UML and Rastriya Janamorcha voted in favor of Deuba.

The Rastriya Prajatantra Party remained neutral on the motion of no-confidence and Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party did not participate in the voting.

The first sitting of the reinstated House of Representatives, as ordered by the Supreme Court, was held at 4 pm on Sunday.

In today’s first meeting, the letter related to the convention call received from the President’s Office was read out and the new government tabled the ordinances. Similarly, the proposal to take a vote of confidence by PM Deuba was presented in the second meeting.
